When I am told by someone that I will go to hell for eternity if I do not believe in Jesus, it peaks my curiousity. I wonder: why is going to hell such a big deal?

...

You're not going to Hell because you do not believe in Jesus. You're going to Hell because you used the word 'peak' rather than 'pique'.

Oh fuque! My spell cheque is not worquing.

Humans have a beginning, so, the best we can hope for is forever.

Nobody goes to Hell for eternity. Humans are not eternal.

Besides..........eventually everyone will get out. Even Hitler.

Those sorts of beliefs are heresy to a large number of christians. I think it pretty much violates the doctrine of the entire Southern Baptist Convention which is a sizable chunk of American christianity.

Wasn't Hitler a Christian?

If he believed in Jesus, then he is in heaven.

Gandhi, on the other hand...

but it does accurately represent judaic and other belief systems.

The original judaic didn't even have the concept of hell. Just sheol. I would say it is debatable whether there was any concept of an afterlife at all presented in the Torah.

Well.......considering that the Bible was pretty screwed up after the Niecene council, as well as the fact that most of the ideals for modern day Christians are based upon what the Catholic church laid out, I'm willing to bet that most modern Christians don't really have a clue about what is really going on. I mean shit........Christmas and Easter are based on the spring and winter solstices, not the actual date of the event.

As far as is there a "real" Heaven? Might wanna check the Torah again for that one. Many rabbis as well as others have spoken of walking in the Garden of Paradise, which is to say, Heaven.

Besides.........I lived with a Baptist foster family for 3 years. Never seen such an uptight bunch of people in my life! I ran away from then after 3 years (when I was 16), and went back to live with my grandparents.

Most Baptists are fucked up people.

I agree that many christians are poorly informed regarding their own faith. Not all by any means, but far more than one may expect. As far as the rabbis speaking of "heaven", they may speak of it, but just like some christians, they may speak of things that are not actually supported by the texts. I don't recall the Torah advocating the existence of an afterlife. The early Israelite beliefs focused on being rewarded in this life. Sorry about your experience with a baptist family. I live in the rural south. I know how uptight they can be. Did you catch this article when it came across the wire?

The thing about these threads that gets me is that when Christians or Conservatives have a complaint about something of this nature we're told to turn the channel or ignore it or whatever. If that's good advice for us why isn't it good advice for everyone? Don't want to hear what someone has to say? Don't listen. And even more so don't start threads on internet message boards about it.

So some Christians told you you're going to hell... so what? Don't believe it? Then why does it matter? Islamic fundamentalists have similar thoughts about you, where's the thread about that?

I think the thing that really drives these threads into existence is doubt on the part of the "non-believer". If you weren't worried about there being some truth to it there would be no reason to bring it up.

I think you missed the point of this thread.

I don't care that I'm being told I'm going to hell. It doesn't concern my one iota.

I made this thread to try to figure out why I am going to hell. Assuming going to hell is a really bad thing, what have I done to deserve this sentence? What have other spiritual people, who happen to not be Christians, done to deserve eternal damnation?

That's what I'm getting at.

And by asking the question, it is clear that I WANTED to hear what someone had so say about it. Had I not wanted to hear others' perspectives, I would have just flamed and called everyone a "dumbass"...but instead I just proposed a question.

And the question could be posed to any and all religions. Muslims...Jews...Buddhists...if you want to weigh in, please do!

I don't think I missed the point at all. I think you're trolling Christians. Most all religions have a punishment for not believing but you didn't address that general case, you made this about Christianity. And, you said you had some Christian teaching in your background which makes it seem even more unlikely that you're baffled but the beliefs of some. But whatever, it still seems to me that if you don't believe it you wouldn't be bothering with any of this. I don't think atheists are right and I'm secure in that belief, you don't see me starting threads asking them to justify their beliefs because it doesn't matter to me, I'm not secretly worried that they might be on to something.

And for me there's nothing to weigh in on. I don't believe anyone is going to hell.

Well, aren't you just so cute and....self-righteous! You must just love bein' a Christian, because self-righteousness is such an inherent part of feeling good about religion and being one of God's Chosen. Unlike those others!

Not all Christians are full of hate for others who believe differently than them xotoxi.

There are many that are full of love and tolerance for others that have different faiths.

Don't compare a small group on here who are promoting their hate and intolerance to all Christians!

I'm sorry if I made it sound like a generalization. I definitely do not think that the majority of Christians believe this.

My questions are directed to that small minority of Christians (or any religion) that for some strange reason has the notion that they are right and everyone else is wrong.

Being raised a Christian, and having spoken with many spiritual family members, I am of the mindset that no one is right and no one is wrong with whatever they believe, as long as they do not hurt others.

I also strongly feel that those who hurt others in the name of their religion are just evil individuals, and they are mis-interpreting their religion.

So, again, this is not directed to the mainstream Christians or people who are religious...it is directed to the Fred Phelps-like people who are lurking about.
the real question is jesus right and everyone else wrong

When I am told by someone that I will go to hell for eternity if I do not believe in Jesus, it peaks my curiousity. I wonder: why is going to hell such a big deal?

And it turns out that it is a VERY big deal to the person that believes it.

And to then extrapolate that same damnation to everyone worldwide that does not believe in Jesus...that's just bullshit.

I would like to ask two questions (to those who believe the above):

WHY IS YOUR RELIGION THE ONLY CORRECT ONE?

...and...

WHY IS THE PENALTY FOR NOT BELIEVING IT SO HARSH?

1) Why would anyone have a religion if they didn't believe it was the only correct religion?

2) I don't believe those who haven't yet met Christ are going to hell, that's not for me to decide and Christ taught that God was a loving God. Personally, I think that whole thing was made up by people to scare others into converting, and it's been passed down ever since. Few Christians question it, but I do.

only liberal maniacs believe hitler was christian because that falls in line with their own racist philosopical and quasi theological underpinnings

That was one of the most stupid posts that I have ever read.

What religion was Hitler? Jew? Muslim?

if youre not smart enough to understand the post then there is no reason to give you anymore information, i would not want to overload your puny pea sized brain. But I will give you this, hitler was his own religion, he was messiah, mein kampf his "holy book" and the swastika his religious symbol. hitler was the perfect socialist.
