My initial reaction to Putin’s criminal aggression against Ukraine was to compare his conduct to what the world allowed Hitler to get away with at the outset of German’s military aggression.
Maybe — back then — if the world had reacted more forcefully against the monster, hundreds of thousands of lives could have been spared.
That said, it isn’t all that clear that Putin is seeking some new Russian Reich. His motivations don’t excuse his actions. But upon some reflection, I’m no longer so sure that we should equate Putin’s criminal behavior with Hitler’s insanity.
