The Histories say the Russians needed them. And since the penalty for any offense in the Soviet era was death or punishment battalion where you got the honor of running through minefields to clear them. I’d say that the women were not nearly as vulnerable as you would want to believe.

I knew a couple hardcore, bad bitches in the service, but even they weren't able to hang with an infantry element for long. The one I knew best, good friend of mine, a medic, was hard as **** but her body couldn't tolerate the abuse she put it through trying to hang with us. She was medically retired for back injuries after serving 11 years, and later killed.

It's not just about getting into shape, lifting something once, or running fast with zero gear on, etc.; things like durability and the ability to endure punishment, and recover quickly all matter. How much weight you can carry on you and keep moving, and for how long, are pretty ******* important too.

And frankly, trying to keep a 19 year old focused on mission instead of on ***** was a headache I and most other grunt NCOs just didn't need; we had enough on our plate as it was.
