With 2 lockouts - soccer may become Americas Pastime by default

I can never understand this. It's 2 45 minute periods of non-stop action.

World Cup is once every 4 years...it's not even "wait till next year!" You get 2 chances, maybe 3 in your entire career.

How big is a soccer goal? 8' x 24'? And yet, often, teams are shut out, teams only score 1 goal, etc. That obviously means that a)way too much of the game is spent puttering around the middle of the field, b)the rules of soccer are far too restrictive where scoring is concerned, c)in general soccer players are just not very talented, d)soccer goalies are more than human, or some combination of these. From the little I've watched, I'd say both a and b are the case.

Now, I'm sure if you are a fan of a team, games can be exciting. That's true of pretty much any competition. As an outsider with no one to root for, though, the game tends to the boring. Add in the stereotype of soccer players being pussies who drop to the ground, writhing in pain at the passing wind of another player and any number of little differences from the major American sports and it's a very hard sell. Honestly, if I remember correctly, indoor soccer seemed like a better idea. Smaller field, quicker play, more chance for decent action.

There's obviously the cultural baggage to deal with, as well. Soccer has never been popular in the US, where it is huge in a great deal of the rest of the world.

Personally I think a 1-0 pitcher duel is a better baseball game that a 11-6 home run competition.

Would you say the batters that got struck out by Pedro Martinez, Tom Seaver or Bob Gibson were puttering around home plate and needed HGH and a lower pitchers mound?

1. Baseball is also usually boring as hell.
2. Baseball players are not trying to kick a 28" circumference ball into an 8' x 24' goal with only one person in the way.

Baseball is the only unique team sport. All others are a variation of putting the ball in the goal

Soccer blows donky balls.

Any game that ends in a tie and the people cheer, is a game for pussies.

Krist, I'd rather watch competative food eating.

Soccer is the only game where if the ball hits you in the head, nobody laughs at you

The only thing more boring than a soccer game is another soccer game.

I personally don't care if another Pro football, baseball or basketball game is ever played again. I'm sure I can find something to do with my time.

I've been a huge drag racing fan since the late 60's but I've been watching less of that too! Unless they're sending me a check, I'm just finding it less and less interesting. Seems like the same old shit happens every year.

Soccer has a tough row to hoe in the United States for one reason.... It's NOT a linear game. Americans are STUPID when it comes to sports. They want nice, simple, linear games that don't require much tactical knowledge or understanding of the sport from the fans and which have a lot of offense and scoring (or at least violence). Soccer is the exact opposite. One must actually understand the game to truly enjoy it, and it's not generally high scoring. The other thing is that American sports fans are used to sports where the officials call everything and where the idea of faking an injury to draw a penalty or advantage is relatively unheard of. Soccer involves some amount of diving and faking. It's a part of the game I'd like to see go away, but it IS part of the game. It's part of the tactics and probably will always be.
