I don't know how this thread got onto unions, but I will always remember when I worked for a company that was headquartered in Luxembourg. They had unions for all of the trades and for the engineers. The unions worked with management to resolve issues, and make the company profitable. The unions knew that management would not lay them off at the first business downturn, and they would participate in the profits when they came.

I recall one specific troublesome engineer, who appeared to be incompetent. The union worked with HR to find him a position - in fact they created a position for him that didn't require engineering knowledge or skills - as the coordinator of travel, living, and entertainment of employees coming into the home office on business. It was a full-time job and he was great at it.

The antagonism between unions and management in the U.S. is unnecessary and counterproductive, especially in the public sector.

Government employees should never be permitted to unionize. Even Franklin Roosevelt understood that.
