Extreme religious ideology like ISIS and hardcore evangelicals do not seem to be fascinated by space. ISIS banned the teaching of evolution in the areas it conquered.

Does poverty keep humanity back? If we gave every human a copy of the Mass Effect trilogy and access to all the space adventure novels ever written would the world be a better place?

What is it about science and technology that scares ISIS the most?

Not in the United States you don't ... the right to belief and the right to peaceably express belief is fundamental to a free society ... what the above statement reflects was the Soviet Union's attitude towards religion ... the opiate of the masses or some such thing ... and that's not how the United States got to be what it is today ...

Religion is impacting scientific development less and less as the generations go by ... just a short 400 years ago, Galileo nearly was executed for demonstrating our heliocentric solar system ... no way was the Church of England going to publish Darwin's material ...

The only way the church interferes with the bold plans laid out in the OP's article is the money sent off to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and clothe the naked ... and it's all moot anyway, humans will go extinct long before any probe of any kind reaches the nearest star, and just as long getting back with data ... humans are just the last sickly bud on this dying and diseased branch of the tree of life ...
