Actually every ship is getting overcharged. There's a drought, so there is a limited amount of water to run the locks. So they can't handle as much traffic. This means more ships vying for fewer available trips.
So to make it fair, they started auctioning off transitions through the canal. With the transit going to the highest bidder.

Pure free enterprise. But because you have the classic inflation scenario. Too much money, chasing too few goods, the price is much higher than it used to be.

So everybody is paying through the nose.

The word cheat probably isn't the right application here. What China does when they trade with us is make a direct infusion contact from one economy to the other. The economy that supplies us being China has a completely different standard of living for its workers.... Has no oversight by anything like the FDA the EPA or OSHA to add cost to the product. A direct pipeline of trade cheats the American worker who has to work underneath all the federal regulations in order to make a living. If China wants to sell here let them contribute to the EPA, let them contribute to OSHA, let them contribute to the FDA, let them subject their corporate books to examination by the SEC like all of the American companies have to do... Unfortunately I think you'll find that all you'll get from them on that count is the middle finger.
