They felt most betrayed by their host nations for continuing to persecute them even after they assimilated. The vast majority of these Zionists envisioned a secular Israel where Jewish culture is allowed to flourish but with the freedom to be as observant or secular as you desire. Many religious Jews could not bring themselves to support a religious state of Israel and were initially against the concept of Zionism.
