The vast majority of early Zionists were secular. Many early Zionists envisioned Israel as a combination cultural haven and Socialist utopia. Many of the original Jewish settlements in Israel were set up to be just that. They felt most betrayed by their host nations for continuing to persecute them even after they assimilated. The vast majority of these Zionists envisioned a secular Israel where Jewish culture is allowed to flourish but with the freedom to be as observant or secular as you desire. Many religious Jews could not bring themselves to support a religious state of Israel and were initially against the concept of Zionism. Of course, now, a large number of religious Jews, recognizing that living as a Jew in your own country is so much more enriching that living in a host country, have move their communities to Israel.
People who hate Jews will continue to hate anyone they think is Jewish even if that person doesn't observe the customs, say the prayers, or study the scriptures. To a Jew hater, Jews are somehow imbued with "Jewish thinking" at birth and will somehow act against non-Jews instinctively, even if they've never had a day of formal Jewish education.
To a Jew hater, there is no distinction between a religious Jew or a secular Jews ... we are all the same to them.
