Why did black families stay together in the 50s?

Because the breadwinner had a good job in manufacturing in our major cities. Once those jobs moved to other states or countries, those families were left behind.

Truman couldn't get enough support from his own party to run for another term and democrats ran some dorky college professor. Ike won in a landslide and the 50's was a time of peace and prosperity. Democrat JFK narrowly won in '60 and the next thing you know the Russians build the Berlin Wall and the world is in turmoil with the Cuban missile crisis. The point is that republicans are the party of peace and prosperity and democrats can only get elected when we are in some sort of crisis that they manage to create..

Latin, Asian, Russian, Muslim, communities sprung up and 2nd/3rd generation immigrants integrated into the population

Education

Americans today are generally better educated than 60-70 years ago.
