The fact that they raped and pillaged their way through the South a clear case in point. They were no more fighting to free the slaves than the men of the South were fighting to preserve it. If anything, the North was fighting to keep profiting from the slave labor of the South, and the South was fighting to keep it for themselves. Until we come to that realization slavery will always be an open sore for this country.
