In my opinion it should be illegal. Don't get why it isn't. Granted, all these life time loser politicians would probably find a way around it anyway.

In the book, "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlein, he describes a future society where only persons who have served in the military have voting rights.

The idea is, that unless someone has demonstrated his willingness to potentially put his life on the line for society can that person participate in the governing of that society.

The book was written in 1951, only six years after the end of World War II. Most people in the US had recently served in the military or were the family of someone who did.

Military service has changed significantly since the large standing army of World War II and the decades immediately after.

A huge military with legions of cannon fodder no longer fight the battles of our nation. Persons in the military are specialized and knowledgeable.

Today, there are only 1.3 Million active military members out of 330 Million ... one in every 300 Americans ... a true minority.

Yeah. I've long thought that there should be two new Amendments to the Constitution, with one of them being that any candidate for presidency should have served at least one honorable tour in the military, "regardless of the rank achieved." This so that the person seeking to be president, at least has some working experience as to what being a part of the military and how it works is known.
The second new Amendment to the Constitution, should be a damn age limit by the time of taking the office. No more geriatrics. The guy in office now, tells the press that "they" will get angry with him if he answers more questions. He's the president. "HE" tells them what to do, not the other way around.

31 of our 43 Presidents had military service so you’re reasoning doesn’t hold water

Except that was not a good thing.
It just means we had way too many wars and drafts.
Actually all the wars since the War of 1812 was not defensive and were illegal really.
Connections between presidents and military service are bad, not good.
The military is and has to be a dictatorship.

But Heinlein was not necessarily saying it was good to require military service before voting.
And in fact, if I remember "Starship Troopers", it turns out the war was the fault of the humans.
The humans are depicted in black leather and look like Nazi SS.

But still way too many.
We still have 10 times more military than needed, and we still start every war illegally.

Yeah....we were really being violently aggressive against Japan on December 7, 1941.

Ground skirmishes in a huge war may not be the norm anymore.
