It doesn't make any sense. The United States of America is a Christian nation where the majority of Americans celebrate Christmas even if they aren't religious and celebrating the baby Jesus part. There's a reason why this is one of my favorite Christmas songs as it's nothing but truth.

It was added because during the Cold War, many Americans wanted to distinguish the United States from the state atheism promoted by communist countries, a view that led to support for the words "under God" to be added to the Pledge of Allegiance.
