Excuse?
First of all, if you’re going to attempt to use statistics, you need to be more specific. Are the numbers 500% worse than in the 1950’s, or 1910’s, or 1850’s? The 1750’s? An average of all the years? And what numbers are 500% worse? Are you speaking of unemployment, single parent families, or all of the statistics sort of rolled into one?
How am I supposed to effectively answer your question with so many gaps in the information you provided?
Worse since the end of Jim Crow, in every category!

You need to be more specific.
Let’s use our brains for a little bit here. There have been many changes to American society since the 1950’s and I think the negative ones will tend to impact the most vulnerable groups the hardest. Why do I call the blacks the “most vulnerable”? Because whites have owned more businesses, made more money, and have been (on average) more educated than blacks from virtually day one of this country (obviously with a lot of this being driven by the fact blacks were slaves). When manufacturing and low-skilled jobs began disappearing throughout the past 50 years or so - a well documented and researched shift - which group do you think it would impact the most?
Also, what are your thoughts? Why do you believe that black people are worse off today?
My aim is not to make excuses for black people; everyone is ultimately responsible for themselves and their own destiny. What I am doing is explaining why I think blacks - on average - suffer more from poverty in 2014 than white folks. 200+ years of slavery will tend to fuck up things quite a bit.
Using your same methodology I should be a millionaire with my family having been here since the early 1700's. As it turns out I am the first generation to be born into electricity (1978). That aside, blacks are getting worse off because they are having more children out of wedlock, they are dropping out of high school, and they have higher amounts of unemployment than they have ever had after the Great depression. This trend has continued to rise in both good times and in bad. This is not because they are not capable. It's because they have developed a counterculture on an unproven model so as to counter western cultural aspects of which they deemed as the cause of their plight.
It is no coincidence that this trend happened at the behest of 50's and 60's radicalization. The Black Nationalist/Power movements have been adopted as black hero's more so than moderates such as MLK. The Marxist Leninist Black Panthers, the anti Western Malcolm X, The Socialist converted to Communist WEB DuBoise, and the radically Marxist turned Student non-Violent Coordinating Committee, are a few of many examples of those held in higher regard among the black community than the black moderates like Washington and King. As a result they have done everything in their power to be "anti-western." Black names, sagging, gangster rap, unashamed welfare culture, pride in poverty, glorification of drugs/violence, and Ebonics to name a few. I went to an all black school where I also noticed that blacks who did well were accused of "acting white" and blacks who spoke well were accused of "talking white." Among the black youth, being compared to whites is a mark of shame. This culture is largely what is keeping blacks from progressing.
Affirmative Action hasn't helped either. If MIT had a quota to fill and there are no blacks to fill it to the MIT standard, then sending an unqualified black to MIT ensures failure or low grades as opposed to doing perfectly well at a less prestigious University.
Minimum wage laws have also killed the black community. At one time in our history the best weapon a African American had to compete for a job was the ability to work for less, and thereby, get a job he was less qualified for than the white applicant, while gaining in work experience that will make him more competitive. Minimum wage did away with much of this. this is evident especially in a recession where there are many overqualified workers out of a job. How do you compete against such qualifications?
Education is yet another problem. A black single mother doesn't have the time to help her child with his/her studies. She doesn't have time to go to the PTA meetings. She doesn't even have time to complain about the horrible teachers being relocated into the ghetto's. And yet, she made the choice to have sex and birth a child she could not afford or educate? Why? Indeed, 52% of black students do not graduate high school in 4 years.
Drugs is also a problem. Among black youths, drugs are a right of passage. They brag about both selling and using it. This lands them in jail and also creates violence. Not to mention is makes them un-hirable.
Another trend that I noticed when I went to an all black school was that despite 98% of students being on free or reduced lunch, they all had nicer cloths/shoes than I did. Many of them wore jewelry. Adult blacks buy SUV's with tricked out rims and sound systems and statistics show that blacks spend more money on their vehicles than they do housing! This is another disturbing trend brought about by hip hop culture whereas everyone believes they need a status symbol as to attract the opposite sex with their faux affluence.
By far the worst impact on the black community has been welfare entitlements. Currently there are more blacks on welfare than any other demographic. This not only keeps them dependent, but it rewards them for not succeeding. So as long as they do not succeed they get free housing, electric, transportation, cell phones, food, WIC, and a whole host of tax "rebates" among others. Now they don't want to be on welfare, but the mentality that they've developed has incorporated welfare in the daily lives of black people. Worse, they are not ashamed of their welfare mentality and if you go to a social services office at a black majority location in blue jeans and a t-shirt, you will quickly find out that those who are under the age of 30 are wearing about $500 worth of cloths/shoes/jewelry on them. In the parking lot you will see a number of flashy vehicles. The single women there also do not disclose the father of their children because the state pays more.
I could go on forever, but slavery and Jim Crow did not create the current situation that black America finds itself in. So as long as they have children they cannot afford, so as they reject western values, and so as long as they continue to seek immediate gratification, they will continue the downward trend. Blacks look toward the state as their savior, they are more of a collectivist culture, and if you're going to blame anything for their failures it must be their sense of victimhood, a regressive culture, and programs designed to help them.
