The Championships at Wimbledon 2019 is around the corner. With many names emerging as title contenders, who will be the next American woman to win a major title (Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open, or Rolland Garros)?

Let's look at some names, listed in order of current rankings...

2 Naomi Osaka

Two time slam champion just lost her #1 rank, American-raised but plays under the Japanese banner, so she’s not on this list for consideration.

9 Sloane Stephens

Age 26. Won US Open in 2017. Lost in first rounds in two of next three majors. Most recent non-major title: Miami 2018. Seems as likely to lose in the first round as being in the final.

11 Serena Williams

Age 37. 72 titles; 23 Major Titles. Won Australian Open in 2017. Resume speaks for itself. Always a threat, but hasn’t won a title since giving birth two years ago.

17 Madison Keys

Age 24. No Major Titles; four WTA titles. Won Charleston in 2019. Finalist US Open 2017. Was the next big thing for American tennis, but hasn’t made that Major title breakthrough yet.

26 Amanda Anisimova

Age 17. Youngest player in Top 32. Won her first WTA title in Bogota. One of the fastest-rising players on tour along with...

28 Sofia Kenin

Age 20. 2 WTA Titles this year (Hobart and Acapulco). A strong Kenin-Anisimova rivalry could be in the works. Both born in Russia but came to America as young children.

34 Danielle Collins

Age 25. No WTA Titles. Really starting making waves in the last two years.

45 Venus Williams

Age 39. Won 7 Grand Slam titles (5 Wimbledon and 2 US Open). Last Slam title in 2008 (Wimbledon). Finalist twice in 2017 (Australian and Wimbledon). 49 career WTA Titles, most recent in 2016 (Kaohsiung)

54 Alison Riske

Age 28. Two WTA Titles, most recently this year in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and a finalist in Shenzhen. Always a sleeper threat.

64 Jennifer Brady

Age 24. No WTA Titles. Best result this year as a finalist in Indian Wells. Bests grand slam result is Round of 16 (Australian and US Open) both in 2017

74 Jessica Pegula

Age 25. Newcomer to the Top 100, but has only one win in a major tournament match. Was a finalist in 2018 in Quebec City.

88 Madison Brengle

Age 29. No Titles. Best result in major is Round of 16 in 2015 (Australian Open). Best result overall: 2015 Hobart (Finalist)

92 Bernarda Pera,

Age 24. Boron in Croatia. Best GS result: 3rd round (Australian Open)

96 Lauren Davis

Age 25. 1 career WTA title (2017 Auckland). Never been to Round of 16 in a major. Failed to qualify for 2019 Wimbledon but enters the tournament as a “Lucky Loser.”

Others:
109 Christina McHale, Fell in qualifying but enters as a “Lucky Loser.”
120 Taylor Townsend, Entered
123 Varvara Lepchenko, Fell in qualifying
127 Allie Kiick, Fell in qualifying
131 Nicole Gibbs
137 Sachia Vickery, Fell in qualifying
160 Francesca Di Lorenzo, Fell in qualifying
164 Caty McNally, Qualified
168 Danielle Lao, Fell in qualifying
174 Robin Anderson, Fell in qualifying
191 Kristie Ahn, Qualified
293 Shelby Rogers, Entered
268 Caroline Dolehide, Fell in qualifying

Two more notables...

301 Cori “Coco” Gauff

Age 15. Qualified for 2019 Wimbledon tourney. Youngest qualifier in Open Era. Will play Venus Williams in her debut match.

557 CoCo Vandeweghe

Age 27. Was #9 in 2018. Fallen to 557. 2 WTA titles (Rosmalen 2014, 2016). Ankle surgery keeping her out of action this year.

I would say Gauff for sure but realistically she's a few years away at this point.
Kenin, Anisimova and Gauff represent the new wave. Keys has the talent to win but not the mental make up apparently, but I wouldn't mind if she proved me wrong.

If there is any justice in the universe Serena Williams will never get that last Slam title she so desperately wants. She's a horrible person, from all accounts.

Just saw an interview from Wimbledon with CoCo Gauff's mother. She was as pleased with CoCo's respectful and
humble demeanor as she was with her on court success.

Parenting. I guess that's why the Williams sisters are imperious self centered a-holes (Serena to a much greater degree) while CoCo Gauff looks like she will be a winner in the game of life as well as tennis.

Oracene Williams is a fat, disgusting piece of shit and she passed those genes on down, it looks like.

Gauff comes through in tight three set match to make it through the first week at Wimbledon. I hope the hype doesn't overwhelm her but as predicted she seems to be an exceptional player for her age.

We head into the ladies’ semi-finals at Wimbledon, and the last American standing is Serena Williams. The only ones left to keep her from another Wimbledon championship is Barbora Strycova and the winner of Simona Halep/Elina Svitolina.

How did the rest of the Americans fare?

Alison Riske had a great tournament, but lost to Serena Williams in the quarters.

15-year old Cori “Coco” Gauff made the most headlines, making it to the Round of 16 before falling to Simona Halep.

Danielle Collins made it to the Third Round before falling to Petra Martic.

Lauren Davis did surprisingly well despite coming into the tournament as a “lucky loser,” surprising Angelique Kerber in the Second Round before falling in the Third Round to Carla Suarez Navarro.

Sloane Stephens also made it to the Third Round, but lost to Johanna Konta.

Madison Keys fell meagerly in the Second Round to Polona Hercog.

17-year old Amanda Anisimova fell in the Second Round to Johanna Konta. I still think Anisimova can make a deep run soon.

Sofia Kenin also fell in the Second Round to another fast-rising teen Dayana Yastremska. I also think Kenin can make a deep run soon.

Taylor Townsend lost in the Second Round to 4 seed Kiki Bertons.

Madison Brengle lost in the Second Round to Karolina Muchova.

First Round Losers: Venus Williams (lost to Cori Coco Gauff), Jennifer Brady, Jessica Pegula, Bernarda Pera, Christina McHale, Caty McNally, Kristie Ahn, Shelby Rogers. Better luck next time.

Some of the bigger hitters like Shelby Rogers, Jennifer Brady, Collins, Stephens, Keyes (?) should do better at the US Open. I also think the Russian/American twins, Anisimova and Kenin, have bright futures and careers bashing tennis balls around.

Based on what I've seen, at this time Serena is just too fucking strong for the rest of the field. She is obviously bored most of the time, but when she gets her shit together her ground strokes (not to mention her first serve) are simply too powerful for her opponents.

I really don't see anyone in the tournament that can beat her, unless she has an injury or an extended mental lapse.

And to conclude this Wimbledon tournament, Simona defeated Serena in the Championship match.

So the next American champion will have to wait at least until the U.S. Open.

Madison Keys has all the talent in the world but a severe mental block. Does Naomi Osaka count because she's only Japanese technically having lived her whole life in Florida virtually. It sure as hell won't be Serena Williams.

I think Serena has a few more majors left in her
I am thinking this years US Open

Not to be rude but....LOL.

What convinces you? Her aging body? Her portly out of shape physique? The fact that she has lost her top dog mental advantage? The self doubts she must have?

I think it would be a minor miracle for her to win even one more Slam title. She would need a perfect draw and everything would have to fall her way. I think she has hit her expiration date already.

It's probably much easier to be a minor celebrity and live off the fawning media attention she gets. Halep, Osaka, Kivitova, Kerber etc. can't bring her down when she's at some glitzy fashion event.

Serena Williams retired today in the Rogers Cup finals after being down to Canadian Binaca Andreescu 3-1.

Madison Keys has the game and the momentum but she also has an extremely fragile mentality.
If I had to pick one American I would say it would be her but wouldn't be shocked if it wasn't.
Unfortunately Andrea Anisimova dropped out this year due to the death of her father.
I refuse to endorse Serena Williams out of principle.

I think Serena Williams has one more title in her. She would love to go out on top.
