But just because they claim there's a phishing threat on government computers doesn't mean they have to Bleachbit their hard drives and smash their cells into bits with a hammer. He didn't know he was in a "top secret thread" and initially he thought he was being punked - he couldn't possibly be in a chat with these people, and somebody was setting him up. They wanted him to write a story which would prove to be false, and then they could call him a liar.

But when the events of the Houthi attack unfolded exactly on the time line, and with the personnel and equipment as per the group chat, Goldberg wrote the story about this security breach - without disclosing what classified information he had been given.

The White House initially blamed the reporter, and then called him a liar, and now they're talking about what a big success the attack was. But this is still incompetence at the highest level, and an extreme danger to national security.
