Dirk Hempthorne was already out of service to Idaho as an elected official when I lived in Idaho for 6 years. He recently died. He was only 74.
Moments ago, I saw a tribute to the man, and he easily was an outstanding public servant. He truly did serve and devoted his life to working for citizens and not politicians. He started as mayor of Boise and then was a State Senator and then was the Governor of Idaho and he always balanced the budget.
A cabinet member for GW Bush, he went to Iraq even when told not to go there. He wanted to visit the troops. A video follows.
