What You Saw Tonight Was the Trump Effect

All of the marquee races went our way — Mamdani, Spanberger, and key down‑ballot candidates in Virginia, Sherrill in New Jersey, and Proposition 50 here in California. All over performed. Our voters turned out in force and then some.

There were also striking surprises: the Virginia House flipped from razor‑thin margins to a commanding 63-37 Democratic majority; Maine decisively rejected the voter‑restriction Question 1; and Pennsylvania voters retained three justices on the state Supreme Court; and others, for example in Georgia— all outcomes with important downstream effects.

On the Republican side, Ed Day (R‑NY) won a fourth term as Rockland County executive…

It wasn’t just the victories. It was the margins of those victories.

We all knew Mamdani was going to win New York’s mayoral race. But 15 points in Virginia? 13 points in New Jersey? 60% margins for retention of Democratic Supreme Court Justices in PA, despite millions in crap ads funded by Republican dark money? Virginia amping its House of Delegates to Dems with 13 plus margins? Maine dumping an anti-Democratic voter bill? California’s Prop 50 isn’t called yet (oh wait, it is), but the hits keep coming. I have a good feeling about how that one will end up.
This is beyond a shellacking. It’s a total repudiation, in an extremely polarized environment. This kind of thing just doesn’t happen.

Looks like those people that run the polls still can't get it right.

Republicans felt the wrath tonight of voters rejecting Trump's agenda. The biggest issue for voters was the economy, with half listing it as their number one focus. Almost a year into his second term Trump has failed to deliver on the economy as food and energy prices continue to rise and 60% of voters disapprove of his handling. Republicans have lost their gains with Latino voters. In New Jersey, 64% went for Sherrill citing the economy and his handling of immigration has their largest concerns. Trump almost won New Jersey in last year's election largely due to the swing of Latino voters to the GOP. Gen Z voters also did a 180 and overwhelmingly backed the Democratic candidates after backing Trump last year. Overall, only 37% of voters approve of the job he is doing.

These numbers are abysmal and it's the only way a man like Jay Jones can get elected to the top law enforcement office in the state, despite his sociopathic comments about his opponents' children being publicly leaked. It's not just "blue state" statewide offices either. Down ballot, Republicans have lost 11 seats in the Virginia House Delegates, taking the Democrats' 51-49 majority to 62-38. In Georgia, Democrats defeated Republican incumbents in statewide races for Public Service Commissioner. In Pennsylvania, they are sweeping judicial races across the board.

MAGA appears to be repeating the same errors of the 2018 midterm election cycle, denying that Trump is an albatross around their necks by not delivering what the people want. They went on to lose 41 House seats that year.
The house is a fixed quantity....there are almost zero competitive districts. Incumbents basically stay till they die.

**** "Spanberger Republican" Jason Miyares...

the only good thing about the VA election last night is that "servant of Netanyahu" lost...

You’re seriously comparing Obama’s behavior to Trump’s?
I'm seriously pointing out that, when given power, both parties over-correct, over-react, over-compensate, taking things too goddamn far, and ultimately pissing off enough the electorate to get thrown out. Then the process just repeats.

I'm pointing out that the parties just don't learn. Their egos supercede their reason.

Trump and MAGA have taken this behavior to an all-new, surreal and far more destructive level to be sure, but that doesn't excuse the Democrats for what they have done. They played a significant role in creating Trump in the first place.

I figured between the DOGE cuts and the vile dem shutdown they would hurt Virginia badly.

Meh, we will pick up the pieces and move on as usual.

LOL.

I’m glad Mamdani and Jones “2 bullets to the head” won, but not for the same reasons as the OP

You shouldn't be.

This tells me that the voters are so angry at your Spray-Tan Fuhrer that they will vote for ANYTHING with a D behind its name.

I would prefer more moderation from BOTH political parties, but if this is how it has to be, so be it.

Yeah, a democrat Mayor in NY shocked me to my core worse than Bongino.

Like I said, I'm happy but not for the same reasons that you are

Virginia voters show they approve of political violence by electing Jay Jones to AG. Expect more violent rhetoric from Democrats.
