Yes, we have. In fact, it is in living memory that a student or teacher could put a gun into a rack in his/her truck, take it to school and drive home, no one shot up the school. It is in living memory that students could take a firearms class in school, complete with live ammunition, no one shot up the school. It is in living memory that you could order a firearm and ammunition from a catalog and have it shipped to your house through the postal service with no background checks or even questions, no one shot up the school. It is in living memory that people would put their guns in a rack above the fireplace or front door, available to anyone who wanted to pick one up, no one shot up the school.
When an armed intruder breeches the door of a classroom full of terrified kids and a teacher, I want that last line of defense to have something more than a stapler to throw at the shooter.
Look. There is no doubt that if you want to reduce school shootings you need armed guards. But dont be an idiot and suggest that an armed 24 year old female 3rd grade teacher is the plan.
Of course not, and it's a shame that's where your mind went immediately. OF COURSE, I am advocating for teachers who WISH to carry be extensively trained in how to safely use the weapon of choice (note I did not say firearm) before being allowed to have such a weapon in the classroom. Keeping said weapon out of the hands of the kids is another consideration.
