The survey further finds that approximately a third of gun owners (31.1%) have used a firearm to defend themselves or their property, often on more than one occasion, and it estimates that guns are used defensively by firearms owners in approximately 1.67 million incidents per year. Handguns are the most common firearm employed for self-defense (used in 65.9% of defensive incidents), and in most defensive incidents (81.9%) no shot was fired. Approximately a quarter (25.2%) of defensive incidents occurred within the gun owner's home, and approximately half (53.9%) occurred outside their home, but on their property. About one out of ten (9.1%) defensive gun uses occurred in public, and about one out of twenty (4.8%) occurred at work.

Applying those restrictions leaves 19 NSPOF respondents (0.8 percent of the sample), representing 1.5 million defensive users. This estimate is directly comparable to the well-known estimate of Kleck and Gertz, shown in the last column of exhibit 7. While the NSPOF estimate is smaller, it is statistically plausible that the difference is due to sampling error. Inclusion of multiple DGUs reported by half of the 19 NSPOF respondents increases the estimate to 4.7 million DGUs.

n the third column of Table 6.2, we apply the Kleck and Gertz (1995) criteria for "genuine" DGUs (type A), leaving us with just 19 respondents. They represent 1.5 million defensive users. As shown in Table 6.6, the defender fired his or her gun in 27 percent of these incidents (combined "fire warning shots" and "fire at perpetrator" percentages, though some respondents reported firing both warning shots and airning at the perpetrator). Forty percent of these were "warning shots," and about a third were aimed at the perpetrator but missed. The perpetrator was wounded by the crime victim in eight percent of all DGUs. In nine percent of DGUs the victim captured and held the perpetrator at gunpoint until the police could arrive.

Obama's study...

Defensive Use of Guns

Defensive use of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed (Cook and Ludwig, 1996; Kleck, 2001a). Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million (Kleck, 2001a), in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008 (BJS, 2010).

Who said shoot outs, you dumb clod.

Self defense with a gun does not mean it was a shoot out. What it can mean is the criminal attacks, the victim presents their gun and the criminal runs away, surrenders, and rarely has to be shot to be stopped. You truly are dense.

And of those criminals shot each year, only about 235 are killed by the victim with their legal gun......

Any research will show, that trying to get a precise state on gun defense is hard to narrow down. But it does happen, and there are some stats on it, but most research admits that the results are fuzzy at best. Peruse Youtube for 20 mins and you'll find many many videos of guns used in self defense in the U.S. but also in other countries.

You keep trotting out the "stat". Are you saying you don't believe there was this many shoot outs last year?

You are either an idiot or are being deliberately obtuse. Defensive used of a weapon (firearm, knife, sword, whatever) doesn't mean attacking anyone. I have used a weapon to defend against a criminal without anyone being injured and I didn't even bother to report it. When I was in the Army Reserves, I was in uniform guarding our vehicles in a bad area of Los Angeles, a criminal, probably a gang member based upon the tattoos came up to me, pulled a switchblade and demanded my money. I then pulled my own knife and he immediately backed off saying "I don't want no trouble man, put the knife away" and left as quickly as he could. That is a classic case of using a weapon for self-defense. No one was harmed but the criminal was deterred.

One moment you're saying you need it for self defence, then in the same breath 99.99% of gun owners never shot anyone. Your own argument supports the Harvard study that gun self defence is a fallacy, and you've just proven that fact.

No need to stand beside anyone armed.

Don't worry, as a debate doesn't go a gun nuts way, I'm expecting deflections from the list of gun clichés.
I've used a gun for self defense and have never shot anyone.

So in my lifetime 50M+ people had to draw their gun to stop someone?

Really? You’ve never done it. You don’t know anyone who has ever done it. And you likely don’t know anyone who knows anyone who has ever done it. But somehow you firmly believe that a population the size of California has had to do it.

Yeah...and you’re calling me a “dumb clod”.

Gun owners fantasy

But let's be honest here folks. The argument on how many people have used guns for personal self defense is hard to measure. That's a fact, very easy to find out.

However, even if 0 people in the history of the US have ever needed to use a firearm for personal self protection, that doesn't negate the fact that we have a right to bear arms for protection of our Country and State and for personal protection. This right is endowed upon every US citizen, if you choose to do so. Period. The 2A is about protecting liberty and freedom from within and from without. Personal protection is a nice add on.

The whole argument of the need for personal protection is moot in light of what the 2A provides us a right.
