What is driving this trade war?

They have to think that it's okay that we have a completely closed economy.

That makes sense from the isolationist and simplistic MAGA worldview, but not in reality.
The rest of the world will adapt and shift their trade alliances
The US will be on the outside looking in

What is the one (1) consistent common denominator in virtually ALL of Trump's relationships? The ONE thing he will ALWAYS complain about?

It's about how he is "treated". If he feels he has not been "treated" well enough, he gets angry and acts out. This is something that is happening in his head alone. He is the one who decides on the spot if he's being "treated" well enough. If not, here we go.

So in this case, he has obviously felt for decades that he has somehow been taken advantage of by other countries. That they're getting the better of him somehow. So now he's responding in the only way he knows: He's attacking without looking at a bigger picture. He attacks, sees that the results are bad, and then changes course.

I know that Trump's fans think that they'll see a clear, tangible and material difference in their lives once Trump has exacted his revenge on all those countries. The sad thing here is, on balance, they will not. There are larger issues that influence the vector of an economy.

So...win in 2026 and you can remove him....

That's about all that can be done at this point, since his cabinet won't 25th him

Enough have gone that Florida can’t find workers. Instead of raising wages, they loosened child labor laws to attract 14 year old workers. Kids can now work at night on school days.

It’s not working

Actually, what that shows is that small amounts can make a big difference.

Like you said, Florida is having trouble finding the workers it needs.

That leads to pressure to drive up wages.

A few kids aren't going to stop that.

THe world is used to having trade surplues with US.

No one else can or is willing to fill that role.

/----/ How does having ZERO or equal tariffs create a closed economy?
You're just making up stuff because you don't have any valid argument otherwise.

LIAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! China has been stealing intellectual Property since the 70s; you are just a lying freak!!!

The trade war isn't going to stop it...

It is stupid...

Trump was given into his hand the method to win this and he threw it in the bin in 2017 without even understanding what it was...

Hey, the Trumpsters are the global macroeconomic experts here.

Those of us who have spent decades of our lives analyzing and acting on this stuff for a profession are just evil commies who want to destroy America 'n stuff.

They're welcome to their world. I'm done with it.

/----/ A friend created a great gadget, sent it to China because manufacturing was the cheapest, and they delivered a good product at the agreed price.
A month or so later, the Chinese used my friend's design, copied it, and were selling it at retail for less than my friend's wholesale price. He lost it all.

After I retired I joined the board of a private SaaS company, running its investments.

The CFO is a basket case. They have employees in several countries and he has no fucking way to do currency planning to pay them or plan for expansion.

So he's pretty much just sitting there, hoping something permanent happens soon. He sure doesn't like being this helpless. The company simply can't grow right now, and it has Fortune 100 companies sniffing around it for purchase.

So multiply that by a few hundred thousand American companies, and a few hundred thousand foreign companies. Trump has absolutely no idea of the carnage he's causing. And it appears he doesn't care. He just has this vendetta against anyone who he's decided hasn't treated him right.

What's driving the trade war is the fact Trump is fixing years of damage caused by people like Yellen.

That's an important part of his shit show. Trump declared it an emergency. It was not an emergency, or anything close.

But I guess it is, in the alternate universe. Anything to pursue his vendetta.
It's an emergency now. Almost every company we do business with is chopping second half investments. None of us will be able to restart them fast enough even if this all settles down. GDP for the year is at risk.

So much Christmas stuff is made in China and much starts to ship in May. Gets to US in June/July. Gets to retailers in Aug/Sept and is bought in Oct/Nov/Dec. That supply chain is about to break.

/---/ Other presidents, senators, and congressmen talked about it, but Trump actually did it to keep a campaign promise. China is the actual target. All other countries will negotiate.
