Log Cabin Republicans to House Leadership: “Shame!”

Washington, D.C. — Log Cabin Republicans has sent a letter to Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) demanding full accountability and a public explanation for the unprecedented and likely unparliamentary act yesterday that allowed a pro-LGBT amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to fail.

“During an election year in which voters across the country are crying out because they feel our country’s political system is at best broken and at worst rigged, the sham on the floor of the United States House of Representatives yesterday spearheaded by Leader McCarthy played up everything wrong with congress today,” Log Cabin Republicans President Gregory T. Angelo stated. “Beyond overriding an executive order that existed under President George W. Bush, yesterday’s actions on the House floor defy the repeated promises of House Leadership to operate under regular order and with transparency. Log Cabin Republicans commends the 29 Republicans who refused to succumb to strong-arm tactics and voted for the amendment, and demands those congressmembers who perpetuated this fraudulence be held accountable.”

You can read the full letter Log Cabin Republicans sent to Leader McCarthy — as well as the seven Republicans who changed their votes ensuring the amendment’s failure — at this link.

Log Cabin Republicans is the nation’s largest Republican organization representing LGBT conservatives and allies. The more than 30-year old organization has state and local chapters nationwide, a full-time office in Washington, D.C., a federal political action committee and state political action committees.

QUESTION: Can someone please elaborate what was in the executive order already under Bush, or what was the difference. Isn't voting on an AMENDMENT different from an EXECUTIVE ORDER, please explain:

The executive order in question has a history that dates back to LBJ. His executive order (11246) sets the requirements for non-discrimination practices by government contractors. Bush weakened Johnson's EO by granting exemptions from non-discriminatory practices to religious affiliations with EO 13279. Obama in turn rescinded Bush's religious exemption and strengthened Johnson's EO by including protections for the LGBT community with EO 13672. The battle taking place in the House revolves around the differences between Bush and Obama EOs.
