What A Hit

Of course it was a late hit. Why do your think he got suspended?

He might have gotten the benefit of the doubt if it hadn't happened before! The player's rep. is what caused such a long suspension! I thought w/ an appeal it might drop to 2 games! :nono: :dunno:

It was a hard hit. But then, the defender really cannot pull back until he sees that the runner is really going down and isn't faking. Look at this picture, the defender is right up on this guy in his face going FULL SPEED AHEAD like a locomotive, and Lawrence is still on his feet. If they were any closer, each would be feeling the sweat of the other.

And Lawrence was still upright, not laying down even when Al-Shaarir tackled him in his chest, that is why it became such a violent hit, because at that point, the defender's arms had nowhere to go but to push Lawrence back and down, his arms sliding upward into the helmet area.

Defenders are just human beings, these things are bang-bang plays happening in a fraction of a second, at least give them the time to realize the slide, and the time and room to respond. As Shaarir already said, he was actually congratulating Lawrence before the game on being back after his two weeks off with an injury. Gee another injury--- seems like Lawrence might be prone to causing or being in accidents?

I think a lot of the fervor over Al-Shaarir's tackle was really because Lawrence keeps getting hurt and was just back from another injury so people just want to blame the other guy for not letting "their guy" "get a chance." Seems that Lawrence is out for the season now to get his shoulder fixed, heal up, and regroup.

Coulda done without the elbow to the facemask......

Probably going to get a big fine for this one.

Apparently this guy is the Draymond Green of football. He was warned 7 times for previous dirty hits. He could easily had gone over the top of Lawrence but dropped down and elbowed him in the face.

I have heard that there was once that he got called for a late hit on a guy going out of bounds that was borderline because the guy was trying to get extra yards. These were football plays. They didn't become dirty hits until just a few years ago when the NFL went on a mission to try to make football clean and safe.

He could easily had gone over the top of Lawrence
Easily? You mean he should have known where and when Lawrence would be 1/6th second in the future when the guy was still standing and running right before he got to him? And had he "gone over Lawrence," he would have been untouched and could have slid under him and gotten right back up and continued running down the field.

but dropped down and elbowed him in the face.
Show me. I've already posted still frames showing that Lawrence was still sitting up when they hit and the defender hit him in the chest with his forearms, but if you have a better picture that shows different, I'd love to see it.

There are lots of plays where I agree that the QB slides late and the defender has no chance to stop his momentum. This was not one of those plays. Lawrence is 5 yards into his slide when Azeez launches at his facemask. That and the other dirty plays he's known for is why he was suspended 3 games, just like Draymond Greens' multi-game suspension.

Sorry Mike, but I must disagree as photos show where the slide began, and the defender was already right on top of him as this photo shows. Lawrence did not touch his knee going down until he got to the 1st down marker. There was no 5 yards of slide.

The defender was already at arm's length nearly, running flat out full speed at the point that Lawrence touched his knee to the turf signalling he was doing down, and even at that, Lawrence remained upright nearly level with the defender! There just wasn't time for the defender to react to abort the hit. And Al-Shaarir clearly hit his CHEST, he did not launch at the face mask.

In fact, you can see that the defender actually dropped his aim down to stay with the chest when he saw that Lawrence had gone into a slide. Had he not put his hands out ahead of him, they would have collided helmet-to-helmet.

I agree with you there. His suspension was not based on this hit but on past questionable tackles and also likely because they were mad that Lawrence got hit again after just coming back from a two week injury. The NFL must protect their star money makers and this is all about the money.

Lawrence had given himself up 5 yards prior to the position shown in the picture. That's why the refs always mark the ball yards behind where the QB is touching the ground. That's why it is a flagrant hit, Azeez knows the slide rule and he took his head shot anyway. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one!

Sorry Mike, but I've seen this thing from 50 different angles. You cannot "give yourself up" until your knee hits the ground and from there, Lawrence only slid a few more feet. He did not slide 15 feet. Until your knee hits the ground, the defender must treat you as an active player who might yet still pull a fake and run farther on you. And when his knee hit the turf, Al Shaarir was only 6 feet in front of him charging like a bull.

Huh? The refs mark the ball at the point where you begin the slide, not where you end up.

Guess so.
