The Red Sox game was postponed, and they are showing a game from 1995. I don’t know who the play-by-play guy is, but I recognize Jerry Remy’s voice as the color commentator. When Remy first got behind the mic, he was much more serious and businesslike than later years. He got more interesting as time went by and I miss those days. 1995 was 30 years ago and that is a stunning reality. The players are all pumped on steroids if you notice, and they are bigger than what you see today. I was visiting a Gold’s gym then, but I resisted the juice.
I could tell you muscle stories about those days and I wonder if some of my gym mates from that era are still above ground. Hell, there is no need to wonder; they are not. That was the year I broke my elbow chasing the wheel of a fast girl on a bike during a group ride that always turned into a race. I was 48, everyone else was in their 20’s. It was getting dark and I cut a corner that was dark gravel. I hit the road without even taking my hands off the handlebars. As luck would have it, a state trooper came by as they were picking me up off the road. Things got official quick, and the next thing I knew was an ambulance was loading me aboard. They strapped my head to something and took me to the emergency room. The trooper, a female, was nice enough to put my expensive racing bike in her trunk and bring it along.
Anyway, I miss Remy and his interactions with pitcher, Dennis Ekersley on occasion. You think things will always be the same, but they will not. Baseball has changed and today even the umpires can be overruled by technology. I miss Remy and Eckersley, but they gave me precious memories of baseball that is our sport.
