But Rome never fell....power just shifted.
 
Pliny the Elder died at the port, he apparently was safely aboard ship and insisted he wait for a companion, so he left the ship to do so and was killed, if memory serves.
There is a new-ish theory that he had a heart attack but I saw it referenced and don't know where it came from or how that conclusion was reached.

Originally, it was believed that those who died at Pompeii did so due to asphyxiation. Recent studies, however, challenge that. It's estimated that temperatures rose to opver 300° celsius (540° fahrenheit) in just a fraction of a second. Basically, the victims didn't have time to suffocate...
