Uh, the USA used a volunteer army for most of its history. There was a draft during the civil war, the First World War, and from 1940 to 1974 or so. The draft is a relatively rare occurrence.

The boxer known as Cassius Clay was recruited by the anti-American Islamic front. Islamic names were all the rage for Black sports celebrities at that time and Clay became Ali.
