How did you deal with the draft?

How I dealt with the draft in 1965 when I was 17 might be a lot different if I were 17 today. You have to look through the lens of the time period. It was just 2 years after JFK was murdered and LBJ went all in for Viet Nam, and no one thought he was anyone's friend. Most of my parents' friends were veterans of ww2,, (less than 20 years ago, and they were proud of their time) and there was still a lot of confidence in the government, which started to fade around 1967, as the truth started coming out. I enlisted in the Navy in 1965 and went to electricians school then the nuclear power program. I still believed we were a good country; I still do but that we have lost our way. I never looked down on protesters, but didn't wear my uniform at home either, but served as best I could. I was actually in the DC police cadet program in high school, and probably could have gotten a deferment id I wanted, but like I said, things were different. I do believe that bringing back the draft would be a good thing if for no other reason than to get kids away from home and the bad influences they are around and give them some perspective. I don't know how I would advise an 18-year-old today.

This is a wonderful post thank you
and thank you for your service.

I have two navy
Vietnam friends one
was on the SS Hope
the other on the Forrestal.
James Forrestal
was the Secretary of the Navy WW2

My friend
was a brown shirt plane
captain was just coming on duty when it happened.

John McCain was waiting to take off.
It was a dark day for the United States Navy
But here we are today.

What our service people
go through is incredible.

No other organization in the history of mankind
has risen
to such occasions as our military.

I hope people remember that
as they enjoy their very freedom provided by our military.

This will be the greatest flag Day military parade in history
that I can tell you.

Da Nang is a popular stop for tourists visiting Vietnam, I had a ticket to go there late last year but the weather was terrible in January (rain every day) and I was just getting over a respiratory infection about the same time my flight was scheduled to depart Bangkok. Trying to reschedule the flight on VietJet ended up being impossible as they made little attempt to respond to my inquiries and it is quite possible no one spoke English. It is also possible they saw my nationality and just chose to ignore me.

It's a beautiful country, I visited Ho Chi Minh City and look forward to seeing Da Nang on my next trip to SEA. I certainly am grateful I was never sent there as an occupier. I worked with many Vietnam veterans over the years and they did not say much about their actual time over there. It was a terrible war that should have never been fought, and ended in 1975 after being occupied since 1887 by French, and later American, colonizers.

Sounds like a tough experience with the weather and flights, Vietnam can be unpredictable. I’m planning a trip there myself and have been checking out tourism in Vietnam, Tourism In Vietnam Statistics 2024: Your All-In-One Travel Guide. Da Nang looks great, and I’m hoping to climb the Marble Mountains while I’m there. I also appreciate your perspective on the war, talking with veterans really shows how complex that period was.

I knew this man named Leo Black. He readily volunteered in WWII at age 16, and lied about his age because he wanted in. He is still alive today. Met him on a forum and then in person. I'll tell more later after I come back.

Remarkable country. Very cheap and polite people and being American is no problem whatsoever. They seem to dislike the Chinese these days. Spent parts of the last two winters there. The best time is Jan.-March, little rain and not insufferably hot. Nha Trang is a suggestion and a smaller alternative to Da Nang.
