He shouldn't have anything to do with it. He should simply be enforcing the law. That's his job. As sheriff he represents all the people and represents the law of the community, laws written by the people the community has elected. He should not be taking political sides.

Correct, we have a system in place to change laws and it has nothing to do with mobs or uprisings. The will of the people is the primary consideration, but human rights always have the last say.
