USMB Coffee Shop IV

I just saw that Albuquerque is having their hot air balloon festival and one of the balloons knocked down a radio tower. It's supposed to be the second time in the last 20 years it's happened. No one was hurt, thankfully, but it doesn't make me want to go up in a balloon.

Happy that WelfareQueen and Montrovant and those they love continue to escape the worst of the hurricanes and I hope that's true of any others in the paths of the storms. May it continue to be that way. Better yet it's time for Florida to get a few years' break from these storms. You're getting far more than your fair share.

How is everyone?

I look with dismay at Florida storms. I spent winter holidays in lovely Sarasota.

Hey expat. Happy to see you back in the Coffee Shop. The storms have been horrendous and many are still seriously suffering and at risk, mostly in North Carolina that was caught off guard and unprepared for massive devastation.

Florida has taken a terrific beating three times in the last couple of years but it's still standing. They have good government there that prepares very well in advance of these storms so recovery is efficient and effective much more quickly. Also a tough building code so there are fewer people losing their homes and businesses to a bad storm.

Sarasota was not unscathed but came through it much better than anyone expected.

"It was not catastrophic: Sarasota residents relieved after Milton passes.'

Yeah. There is usually one or two incidents when you have many hundreds of balloons flying around. Their safety record is pretty good but accidents do happen. You want to be sure your pilot is seasoned, experienced, and sober and then the odds of anything going wrong are much less.

I just saw a couple of bands at House of Blues in Orlando last Thursday: Born of Osiris and Jinjer (there was a third band in between, but I was not a fan). I didn’t like how Jinjer fid one of my favorite songs of theirs, but it was still a good show.
I was going to see a band called Demon Hunter on Monday, but it got canceled because of the hurricane. ☹️

You’ve probably never heard of any of them, of course. I know who Tom Jones is, though! 🙃

I love the blues - but haven't heard of either of theses bands. I hope you the hurricane hasn't impacted you too much!

I put a thick layer of egg potato salad on a croissant. While I carried the plate the croissant rolled over and dropped salad on the floor. Splat. I lost a bit less than half. Next time I could mash the croissant flat before adding spread.

Since my class reunion late summer, I've been reacquainted with a childhood friend. He lives in Florida. Helene messed up his front yard, but Milton ruined his interior. Lots of dry wall to rip out. Furniture to replace. His wife takes great pictures and is a good storyteller on facebook. My local utility company in Michigan sent a crew down to Florida to help restore power. Small world.

I bet you and my Hombre are the only two people in the world that make potato salad sandwiches. LOL

We have a friend living in Tampa--used to be an Albuquerquean--who rode out Helene with minimal damage but evacuated ahead of Milton. I think their power was just restored and they are headed home. (They were staying with friends or relatives in North Carolina that was not devastated by Helene.) A neighbor took and sent them a picture of their home that seemed intact though a large strip of trim was hanging off the garage. Landscaping took a beating though.

But yes, it's a small world and a real heart warming blessing that so many people all over the country are able to help fellow Americans in need.
