Trump was told that again by the National Archives in a letter. By the National Archives in a subpoena. And finally by an FBI search warrant.

After three warnings, Trump still sought to retain classified documents illegally.

You can compare disobeying three notifications, to disobeying a single notification, followed by compliance.
