Trump targets homeless problem

I wish it wasn't so. The people living on those streets, by choice, think it's freedom. That's how my parents thought. Freedom! The most important thing in the world. Freedom.
I don’t think the vast majority on the streets are there because they are competent, sane people that just want to live a nomads life for some time

The idea that you can be committed to an asylum for having a mental illness should scare everyone. It's an open field; the list doesn't exist.

Where are the members of congress who represent these districts? Nancy Pelosi's congressional district is a filthy mess littered with human excrement and dirty needles and yet she does nothing to deal with the situation. How do these people get reelected? Is it A.I. voting?
They are Democrats, they only know how to blame Republicans. When there are no Republicans to blame, they pretend it doesn't exist.

But that would mean less money for social workers and government drones.
True. Most of the $250K would go for administrative costs. What would be left for the homeless would be little better than the tents and cardboard boxes they live in now.

When offered shelter they either refuse or get violent and disruptive to get thrown out. There are some people who simply cannot be helped. Settle them in some open land somewhere and leave them be.

I can remember when we, as a society, knew how to enforce a level of civilization where people were not shitting in the streets.

We can turn the clock back to that more civilized time.
Only in your tortured dreams sir. Humans delude themselves into believing they are civilized. US Army troops passed out flea-infested blankets to the Native American tribes to make them sick, and that was done in the name of 'civilization'.

Zionists of both Jewish and Christian stripes are shooting up starving people standing in line for food in Gaza. That's being done in the name of religion.

The homeless population in the US is here for many reasons, and predatory lending by banks 20 years ago is one important factor. The failure of crony capitalism is another.

The only people dumber than Trumpanyahu are those who believe his nonsense.

The feds don't do janitorial work.

If 15% + of Crimes in the US are directly tied to Homelessness & Drug Abuse then a bold change is needed pronto
The paradox is that our most serious problems are a goldmine for many. Solving them would kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

I never hear about the multitudes of skid row winos that make up most of the homeless populations. Alcohol is a drug, so there's that.

This is huge. The status quo, where the goal was to get these people back into society, has clearly been a massive failure.

I have been supporting this idea for years. It is cleary the right answer. THis could save thousands of lives. And reclaim our cities.

Hell,l maybe bring back the 24 hour donut shop and grocery stores.

Discuss.

Well although I hate the son of a ***** and find it hard to believe that anything that he does will be beneficial to anyone besides himself, I'm will to give this a chance. The problem with the deinstitutionalization movement back then was that the community services that were supposed to be put in place were never fully implemented.

I will be interested in seeing if the promised funding is actually appropriated. I also have concerns about the civil rights of people who may be involuntarily committed to institutions .

I will be watching

You don't know that. This is not the 1960s anymore. Things are far more transparent today, largely due to the technology, not to mention a will to not repeat the errors of the past. That can be prevented with proper oversight.

Doing nothing isn't fixing the problem. It's making it worse.
Or they will be treated the same way as the undocumented people who are being sent to Alagator Alcatraz.

Ooops! Here we go

Longtime social workers, medical experts and mental health service providers say the new approach will likely worsen homelessness across the country, particularly because Trump's order contains no new funding for mental health or drug treatment.

Additionally, they say the president appears to misunderstand the fundamental driver of homelessness: People can't afford housing.

The president's order calls for more "involuntary commitment," which is a process in which mental health workers can forcibly detain and medicate people against their will. Studies have shown that the housing first model is significantly cheaper and more effective than involuntary detention.
