He's a populist, not a conservative. Supporting transgenders in the past is NOT the same as supporting the current transgender agenda.

Transsexuals have been around and in the news since at least the mid-seventies. Richard Raskin changed his name to Rene Richardson and had his body surgically altered to match. No one much gave a crap what he did, though there were plenty of late night talk show jokes about it. He even competed in women's tennis without much objection, since we wasn't any better as a woman than a man.

Plus, he had had his male genitals removed, he wasn't some six-foot asshole who swung his hairy dick in front of college girls while he squeezed his balls into a girl's bathing suit, so he could steal all their scholarships. Supporting that is the current transgender agenda. Not the same as giving a yes or no answer to a question that could have different answers based on context. Men have for a long time been able to legally become women. Trump had to take that into account in his answer.
