I was trying to read a link about a murder in GA and it was filled with ads for some "turkey neck" product so I backed out of it.

Now I've received two "turkey neck" EMs and this popped-up on this board's feed.

Yes sir, I got it all wrong, no way should we leave any open space without a data center on it least we be consumed by turkey neck!

I've really got to upgrade my ad blocker. 😐

It goes deeper than this - this website uses "Google Adsense" among other collection tools.
Everything you look at, how long you look at it and what you type etc. is all analyzed by these data collection software that then applies advertising and content that it believes you are interested in.
And - it can even be harmful. My own case in point - on a different forum there was a thread about sexualizing young girls. The infamous beauty contests, especially in the south, the dance studios where the girls perform sexualistic dances etc. People were all talking about it.
So I go on facebook. And when scrolling you know how you see "Reels" - those little video snippets? They were all of preteen girls dancing/gymnastics etc. At first I didn't notice it. But it kept doing it. And I am asking myself "why am I getting this plastered everywhere?" Then I remembered that thread.
I had to click "Not interested" on them over and over for several weeks before they finally went away. Think about how fucked up that is!

No shit, I was just scrolling down the article till I gave up and backed-out to find another link.

It should be illegal to pester folks like that.

It is like hunting mushrooms, if you have ever been.
When hunting mushrooms you are blind to them, until you see the first one. Then the 2nd one - and just like that your brain opens up and you start seeing them with ease.

Once you become aware of the ads you are seeing, and how it relates to what you are doing - your eyes open and you start seeing just how much you are watched. It get's eerie. My wife and I have absolutely seen ads that are directly related to recent purchases - such as you buy a, I don't know - a toaster at Walmart and use a credit card. And whalaa - you start seeing ads for small kitchen appliances. It isn't just what you do online, it is also what you buy and where you go IRL.

And just sayin - in a consumer based economy - everything is about getting your money. You get a paycheck - the entire system of everything is about getting as much of it back as possible.
