When former President Donald Trump was in the White House, he proudly referred to himself as a “Tariff Man” – and he has no intention of retiring that self-proclaimed title if reelected.

Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of imposing a 10% tariff on every good coming into the US, as well as a tariff upward of 60% on all Chinese imports if he regains the presidency. On Saturday, during a campaign rally, he promised a “100% tariff” on cars made outside the US and warned of a “bloodbath” for the American auto industry if he doesn’t get reelected.

Starting in 2018, Trump put new tariffs of up to 25% on washing machines, solar panels, steel and aluminum, as well as many Chinese-made goods including baseball hats, luggage, bicycles, TVs and sneakers – and President Joe Biden has left most of these tariffs in place.

Everyone's supposed to pony up 2% of their GDP for expenses which, in itself is inherently unfair to the US to defend Europe, but all Trump is asking is that they pony up their 2% and many haven't been doing it. If you don't honor your financial commitment to NATO then you shouldn't be in NATO, which is what Trump is saying.

It supposedly had an affect. Companies did not move out if their products were costing more to return here. Foreign nations do not have the unions, osha standards, and the work rules. It is hard to compete with that.

So if we make those products, we need tariffs to compete or to charge the same as they do perhaps make the products somewhat inferior. We can do this if we go back to Pax Americana. Rebuilding infrastructure is industrialism also.

I saw a lot of Japanese, and German cars on the road when Reagan was President. I even saw the start of the Korean Cars. Hyundai was just starting to import cars here.

What did happen was that American Manufacturers began to adapt to Japanese technology. Robots started to be used. Lee Iacocca used this to make the K Car. It was essentially a square car because that was easier for robots to work on.

The United States is proud to bear its share of the defense of the Transatlantic Alliance. It is the cornerstone of our security. But we can’t do it alone. And we’re going to need to make sure that everybody who is a member of NATO has full membership. They expect full membership when it comes to their defense; then that means that they’ve also got to make a contribution that is commensurate with full membership.
