Trump official refers Rep. Eric Swalwell for a federal criminal probe over alleged mortgage fraud

Swalwell is the latest Democrat to face mortgage fraud allegations from Federal Housing Finance Agency head Bill Pulte, who sent a letter to the Justice Department on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON — A top housing official in President Donald Trump's administration has referred California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell to the Justice Department for a potential federal criminal probe, based on allegations of mortgage and tax fraud related to a Washington, D.C., home, according to a person familiar with the referral.

He is the fourth Democratic official to face mortgage fraud allegations in recent months.

Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, alleged in a letter sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday that Swalwell may have made false or misleading statements in loan documents.

The matter has also been referred to the agency's acting inspector general, this person said.

"As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me," Swalwell said in a statement to NBC News.

The referral, according to the source, alleges several million dollars worth of loans and refinancing based on Swalwell declaring his primary residence as Washington.

It calls for an investigation into possible mortgage fraud, state and local tax fraud, and insurance fraud, as well as any related crimes.

The Justice Department did not immediately return a request for comment.

The move comes as Trump has publicly urged the prosecution of his political opponents.

Pulte previously sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department for two other prominent Democratic critics of Trump, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., as well as Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook — who was nominated by then-President Joe Biden — on allegations of mortgage fraud. All three have denied wrongdoing.

“Like James Comey and John Bolton, Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, Letitia James and the dozens more to come — I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world,” he added, referring to other Democrats and Trump critics who have been targeted by the administration. “Of course, I will not end my lawsuit against him. And I will not stop speaking out against the President and speaking up for Californians.”
Karma's a *****. He made himself a target by his rank partisan shooting off his mouth,

Trump and his co conspirators were being investigated for their election subversion actions....and election fraud....the fake electors....

This now, is the trump crony head of some agency scouring through the mortgage records for the past 20 years of only people named by the President as opponents of his that he seeked revenge on....

There is a huge difference, evident as daylight.
LOL. Name the Trump crony.

Guess what....you can't.

You're just making an assumption.

And you're totally ignoring the fact that the Biden Adm went after every friend and associate of Donald J. Trump, so your whining about unfair prosecution is highly hypocritical.

It is, of course, bullshit. Just like the rest of that crap.

The faithful will slurp it up and beg for more though.

They know that, but they feel justified for some reason.

And this is a valid excuse for everyone except Trump?

Your side shouldnt have started this while counting on Republicans not to do the same.

Democrats need to stop hiding and declare their intentions to run for Pres in 2028, so their finances can be looked at.

Closely.
If you watched the trial, you would know why....Trump's was premeditated, planned and done repeatedly over a decade, and decades prior whose statute of limitations had expired that were untouchable....Trump's fraud was for hundreds of millions of dollars, not for $600 a year savings, as alleged Letitia James mortgage fraud.

The govt would never in a million years bring any citizen to trial, over a sum so minuscule... They'd settle out of court....

And in reality, not bring the case at all....too small to do such, for how costly trials are....bad use of the limited tax payer funds they have to prosecute crimes in their city or district each year.

You all KNOW this is vindictive....

Name me any case in which the statute of limitations ran out, but the prosecutor dressed the crime up as a felony in order to prosecute anyway?

Name me a case in which any other person on this Earth not named Trump was prosecuted for calling payments to his lawyer "legal fees."

In the words of Clint Eastwood, ever notice how once in a while you run into someone you shouldn't have f*cked with?

As Lettie is finding out, that person is named Donald.

Took him long enough to get to this particular member on his enemies' list.

Lawbreaking takes time.

Well ... it's not like the Dumbocrats weren't on a witch hunt of their own over the past 4 years. I may no longer be a Trump fan but even I know he was being politically persecuted. I'd probably want some revenge as well if I were in his shoes. But don't worry ... the Swamp is perfectly safe. Nobody will lose their job or go to jail. It's all part of Bozo's Big Top. A modern day Keystone Cops.
Being held responsible for his unethical behavior is not persecution.

Of all people. Possible mortgage and tax fraud. Swallwell always has color commentary to bring to the table. It will be interesting to hear what he says about this.

Maybe toss in a little espionage charge for flavor?

He can be prosecuted for fraud, or he can announce that DC really is his primary residence, and resign as a Representative from California. He can always run against Eleanor Holmes Norton (who I was shocked to learn is still alive) for DC's at large congressional seat. As soon as he resigns from California's District 14, he'll be an honest man again.

He has more than three years to get to more!

Will Democrats wise up and ask for a deal, or just wait for their turn?

Yep, another trumped up indictment that isn't going anywhere.

*No pun intended?

He was protected before. And now this. If he's guilty, fuckem' if not, he got to experience 'due process' up close and personal.

Lucky him.
