There is always a conversation on tariffs. Smoot-Hartley is debatable. We were a rising nation with no real social services state and had tariffs up to a certain point that built this nation. Today the conditions are different. We are a slowly declining nation with a high tax environment and huge social services agencies. We are trying to get manufacturing to return from giving it away in past trade deals and when the competition started to make better products and lower costs with it.

Give it a chance. Since you say all of these things are going to happen. I am saying again. If we do nothing, we will continue to purchase more and more products from overseas. particularly China. And we will make China the powerhouse of the world. They are bursting at the seams with a growing huge Naval and submarine fleet. They are starting to screw around Australia and New Zealand as an example. They are building a global fleet. And are catching up in technology. Of course, some of our own people and spies help with that. Every year they are a little stronger. They are building factory after factory and energy plants. The rise and fall of nations can take different routes. The world becomes more dangerous when one is put to the rest and other awakens as the champ.

The government gets the tariffs from those firms that import foreign goods, we get higher prices because those importers raise their prices for what they sell within the USA to compensate for the higher costs imposed upon them by the government's tariffs and unsurprisingly that propagates from firm to firm and finally the consumer.
