My guess -- and who knows, with him -- is that he's hoping that intimidation will motivate the generals there to get rid of Maduro. I just can't see Trump losing American lives there, even if he's convinced the flock that this is about drugs.

Actually we do. We built massive infrastructure in order to process the heavy crude of Venezuela that is now essentially rusting away. We need to triple our energy output to support the rapidly growing digital needs. It's almost always about oil, and controlling what's left of it. Another element of this conundrum is that whoever controls the oil supply of the world controls the world. While everybody is watching the shiny ball and hating Trump, behind the scenes there are massive geopolitical problems that desperately need to be solved or America loses its superpower role. If that happens say goodbye to the petrodollar and the American way of life.
