"Trump says he 'would rather not' impose tariffs on China"

All that crap about tariffs, and he's been in office four days and he's already backtracking.

We all know as soon as he took Musk's money, that he wouldn't put tariffs on China, because it would make Musk less rich.

Trump has been pretty nice to China, compared to Biden, the only time he went a little anti-China was to try and beat Biden in 2020.

"In the second part of a Fox News interview, Donald Trump says he "would rather not" impose tariffs on China, while saying it was their "one very big power" over Beijing"

yeah, he's got "big power" over China, and China has HUGE POWER over Trump.....

Well done MAGA.
Just the latest example of why nothing he says can be taken seriously. So all you can do is wait until something actually happens, and then address the results.

That's a child, not a leader.

More than half of all Teslas are made in China. No wonder Musk leaped with joy onstage with Trump.
Not the ones sold in the United States. In fact, 100% of all Tesla cars sold in the US are made in the US.

They're winning, not because of themselves, but because of Musk. Musk wants to get richer. Musk does business in China and knows if tariffs happen, his business will get destroyed.

Musk told Trump to do tariffs, for some reason, and said the economy would tank.
What business of Musk's would "get destroyed" because of tariffs? Contrary to what has been said in this thread, 100% of Tesla cars sold in the US are made in the US.

Tariffs would have zero impact on Tesla cost/sales in the US. And since tariffs only apply to goods entering the US, the Teslas sold in foreign markets that are produced abroad would not be affected either.

Oh, boy. Saying "would rather not" is not the same thing as saying "won't." Did it occur to you that he was just saying he wished he didn't need to impose tariffs on China?

You know that Biden continued and expanded Trump's tariffs on China, right? You know this, right?

You guys would rather see America decline and fail than to see Trump succeed. Very sad.

Tesla cars produced in China ARE NOT SOLD IN THE US.

Tesla has at least 19 factories worldwide that produce cars, parts and batteries. Only two of them currently operational in China, with one more planned for China - for a total of 3 factories in China. Those vehicles and batteries ARE NOT SOLD IN THE US.

Tesla has at least 4 MAJOR FACTORIES IN THE US THAT PRODUCE CARS/parts/batteries and another half dozen smaller factories that produce batteries and parts across North America. Those are the vehicles that are sold in the US.

I hope that clarifies it for everyone. :)

Musk doesn't want his Chinese buddies getting hurt for ANY US tariffs.

Of course he would “rather not” he made that clear during his campaign

This isn’t anything new

Ok…makes sense why he doesn’t sell the cars produced there in America

Your point??
"Musk doesn't want his Chinese buddies getting hurt for ANY US tariffs".

Go to the bus stop and have a grade school kid explain it to you.

Explain what? I completely agree with your comment.

Musk is a business man so from that aspect, he would want to have a good "business relationship" with the countries he does business with.

But in terms of Musk wanting to "protect China" from tariffs because he has 3 factories there that have zero impact on his business in the US - regardless of tariffs - isn't the way business works.

Had his US business been affected by the tariffs, as a business person, he would be against them - but not to "protect China" - in order to protect HIS OWN business. That's how business works. So no, Musk isn't too worried about "his Chinese buddies getting hurt" because of tariffs. (Because the tariffs will not affect his business).

BS.

They affect CHINA.
His buddies and your trying to say what ever affects China, doesn't affect him?

BS.

They affect CHINA.
His buddies and your trying to say what ever affects China, doesn't affect him?

Not really.

It would be much easier for Musk to close down his factories in China and open them up somewhere else in the world than it would be for China to penalize Musk's businesses that are in China. Musk has already pulled some of his businesses from California to Texas for similar reasons.

All that crap about tariffs, and he's been in office four days and he's already backtracking.
He'll likely change his mind 5 times in the next 5 days if past is prologue.

WTF?

No, it wouldn't.

Why would they do that?

Yes, it would be easy for Musk to leave China - for the same reasons some US companies threaten to leave the US if they are taxed too much, over regulated, etc.

China wouldn't do it - That's the point! China would not risk losing businesses for political reasons. That's why the tariffs would not affect Musk in the US or (most likely) even in China.

Yes, it would.
If didn't, WHY would Trump implement them?

Is Musk starting to gain a measure of control over Trump?

Out this morning:

Trump Would ‘Rather Not’ Put Tariffs on China, Maintains Threat

Yesterday he was talking about 10% tariffs on China but today he is considering no tariffs? Yet, tariffs are still "heaven" to him as he did state on Wednesday that he was imposing a 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

So why the turnaround on China, especially when he mentioned raising tariffs on China by 60% just 2 months ago?

Can it be he is listening (and doing) what Musk wants?
