China began fielding modified and heavily improved locally produced copies of the Soviet Project 629 submarines, which were diesel electric nuclear ballistic missile submarines. We called this class of Submarine the Golf. One sank off of Hawaii. One of the Conspiracy Theories of the sinking of K129 was the location which suggested that the Chinese were to get the blame for launching nuclear weapons at Pearl Harbor. The Chinese produced missiles did not have the range, or accuracy, in 1968, that Soviet systems had.

These missiles were early sea launched versions of the Scud missile. China tore them apart, learned how they worked, and began working to improve and copy them. I know, I have a Wen Generator that is an almost exact copy of a Honda Generator. For less than half the price.

China has had both Submarines, and Missiles, for a long time. They may not have been state of the art, but they were functional. Yes, they stole our W-80 design, and yes, they stole anything else they could. But when we look at their products, we see elements of ours, the English, Soviet, and later Russian elements are there as well as French.
