Well yeah, but Nato spends at least 3x more than Russia even without the US. So, Trump's claim of currently freeloading is hyperbole, and Europe knows that. The US's military misadventures of the past 17 years have not helped Europe, quite the opposite in fact.

But you're right, smaller countries like the Baltics and Ukraine would be totally fucked without the US ... of course Trump was all about ending sanctions until Putingate began unraveling.

Neither party offered much last time around, but Nato needs restructuring. Putin is the only military threat, and the UK Germany and Poland could probably take him. I hate terms like "body slam" used in a political context. Trump called out members of NATO to pay their fair share while Obama spent his time apologizing to pip-squeak NATO countries for America's decadence.

Trump made a fool of himself and the NATO leaders laughed in his face. NATO leaders signed an agreement in 2014 to increase defence spending to 2% of GDP by 2024. Most are on track to achieve that goal. They never agreed to pay the US anything. Not one dime.

Trump made a fool of himself claiming that they're in violation of this agreement. That's why world leaders laughed in his face.
