There is no such thing as lowering standards to produce more "diversity" among aviators.

Over the course of a 30-year career in aviation, I've grown to loathe and disrespect the FAA. The nature of its charter, management and culture attracts the less than desirable types. Those types thrive in that petri dish and continue the cycle of dysfunction.

That being said, their system does have training and performance standards which if doesn't completely weed out incompetence, heavily supervises it.

Supervision and the advancement of technology on the ground and in the cockpit should continue to supply a margin of safety.

But then again, we're talking about the government.

I see someone posting the qualifications for the position has made you look stupid. There are no real qualifications except that you are alert and can be trained to do the job. I took the test and passed it in my 20's with 1 year of college and 4 years in the military. The test was weird but it was not at all difficult and I got called for my interview the following week. They wanted to ship me to Oklahoma to attend the academy but luckily I decided on another career path.

Back in the 60's, less than standard recruits were forced on the military. It was called Project 100,000 and later dubbed “McNamara’s Morons.” It was a failure on several levels and was eliminated.

If the FAA wants to overlook applicants with promising credentials and spend more money and time training others up to standard, it's their ball game. Whadya gonna do? As mentioned in the article, the FAA training programs will have a higher wash out rates.

After doing this for a few years, some FAA luminary may stumble upon the brilliant idea that they should try selecting higher qualified applicants to reduce their wash out rate and lower their training costs.

It takes a special kind of person to become a good FAA flight controller, hours of slow boring work, followed by an overload of traffic, and punctuation by occasional moments of shear terror where hundreds of lies depend on you doing your job right.
