The EC was NEVER a good idea. The very fact they had to modify it with the 12th Amendment after only four tries should be proof enough of that.

Only Four Presidents were cases of the EC overruling the result we would have gotten with a national vote. = Hayes in 1876 (where people called him His Fraudulency), Harrison in 1888, Bush Jr. in 2000 and Trump in 2016. All of these presidencies were historically and uniquely bad in their own ways.
