Most of the so-called "Christians" I've met love to cherry pick what parts of the bible they believe and what parts they chose to ignore.
Coming from someone who never read the bible in their lives, your comment would be worth more if it were written on toilet paper, at least then I could wipe my ass with it.
The bible was composed over a long period of time. I have read it cover to cover, and a study bible at that, which is 3 times larger. Christians aren't christians because they follow every verse of the bible. (I would venture to guess most don't even KNOW every verse) but they are Christians because they believe that Jesus died for their sins and rose from the dead.
To be a Christian you do NOT:
1. Have to be perfect
2. Have to be sinless
3. Have to go to Church every Sunday
4. Have to agree with everything in the bible
5. Live by everything in the bible
The old testament talks about an eye for an eye. Nobody lives by the old testament. The NEW testament speaks of forgiveness and loving your enemy. You can agree that it's wrong to steal but not agree with the idea of killing your neighbor because they killed your child. Modern laws and modern society must be taken into account when reading, interpreting, and living by the bible. It's not "cherry picking" its called using modern laws and modern norms to live as much as a Christian as you can. NOBODY will be perfect, so NOBODY will live by every verse in the bible. Only Jesus did that. The fact that atheists like you actually think the only real Christian is one who is perfect, lives by every verse of the bible and agrees with everything in it tells me you aren't even CLOSE to a Christian.
Our modern life has thrown curve balls at the bible and made us really have to interpret it in a modern way. Take "thou shall not steal" for example. When the bible was written, stealing was pretty black or white. You either took something that was yours or you took something that was someone else's. But now, we have all kinds of grey areas. What about picking up your fast food order and grabbing an extra handful of taco sauce packets to use at the house? What about an extra handful of napkins before leaving so you can keep some in the car? I mean does God interpret that as stealing? I mean they let you have it, but you're taking more than you need. So is it stealing? Well you can't go to the bible for that, Taco Bell and McDonalds didn't exist 2000 years ago. So you have to put modern societal norms into the bible verses and live the best way that you can. What do I mean by that? Two Christians might interpret that behavior differently, one might see it as stealing, the other as no big deal. Doesn't mean either isn't a Christian or that either doesn't believe in the bible or its verses. It just means they interpret bible verses to mean different things when applied to modern society and behaviors considered "normal" in todays world. So if one doesn't do it because they feel that it's stealing, wonderful, all the power to them. But that doesn't mean the one that DOES do it because they see it as perfectly fine since it's free to take anyway, is wrong or bad. You can have 100 Christians in a room and 100 different interpretations of bible verses. None are wrong. All are unique. All worship God. Amen.
But that being said, here are also several interpretations of the bible out there which cause all kinds of confusion and commotion. Did you know that nowhere in the bible does it restrict or ban gambling? I mean lotteries didn't exist in biblical times. There is nothing anti-christian about gambling, but alot of Christians think there is. But the raw truth is not a single passage in the bible tells you not to gamble or play the lottery. The only time its mentioned is one verse where it mentions about being cautious with "get-rich-quick" schemes. But die-hard Christians will say gambling is a sin. No, it's not. At least not according to the bible. And not according to how I interpret it.
Different denominations interpret the bible differently. Catholics worship Mary, despite the commandment that says you shall not take anyone else as your God. They say Mary is holy. Yet nowhere in the bible does it state Mary was holy. They say that if you say the rosary sins are forgiven, despite the bible strictly stating that no manly deeds will get you forgiveness, ONLY God can forgive your sins if you ask him to do so. Sitting in a chair repeating the same prayer over and over again with a string of beads in your hand will not get you forgiveness, IF you strictly believe the bible's teachings. Neither will confessing your sins to a preacher. He's just another sinner, where in the bible does it say you must ask ANYONE but God for forgiveness? ONLY GOD FORGIVES. No sinner on earth can do that for you.
But THE MOST IMPORTANT passage in the bible, to me, is Matthew 7:1 that states "Judge not, lest ye shall be judged." This is the one I live by. I don't judge Catholics even though I think they are whack in their teachings. They are still Christians, still loved by God. I just hope God can forgive them for praying to his mother instead of him. I don't judge other Christians, that's not my job. My job is to help other Christians find God, answer questions they might have, and hope that God won't slam the door in my face at the pearly gates. But if he does, it means I deserved it and I have no one to blame but myself. HOWEVER, this does NOT mean that I can't judge someone's behavior as wrong, disgusting, vile, etc. Because I'm only passing judgement to myself in my own eyes, not as far as God would judge them. It's basically like my opinion of someone. I'm entitled to that. But I would NEVER say "That person is going to hell and that one is going to heaven." I have no idea who is going to hell or heaven, that's not for me to judge or say. That's up to God. But when I see our president diddling little kids I can certainly say "That man is disgusting for his behavior with children." I can find him disgusting. But I'm not judging him in the eyes of the Lord. That's up to God to do that.
I was already a die-hard Christian the day I was shot 6 times in an armed robbery. The fact that I heard a voice tell me "Turn around" and when I did a guy was pointing a gun at me and that allowed me to take evasive action that then later saved my life, I have no one but God to thank. When multiple nurses come into your room and tell you "The only reason you're here today is they didn't have an opening in Heaven Friday night, it just wasn't your time to go" it makes you think damn hard. I mean what are the chances 6 feet away, someone shoots me 6 times and doesn't ever hit a vital organ or cause permanent injury? Within 8 months I even returned to work. 11 bullet holes. 11 times God reminded me "I'm in charge here, man. It's not your time. Get your butt back to work!" Yes SIR!!
