NAFTA s effect on United States employment - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

U.S. employment increased over the period of 1993-2007 from 110.8 million people to 137.6 million people.[9] Specifically within NAFTA's first five years of existence, 709,988 jobs (140,000 annually), were created domestically.[10] The mid to late nineties was a period of strong economic growth in the United States. Classical macroeconomic theory suggests that when a country is experiencing economic growth (i.e. GDP is increasing), then there will also be an increase in the participation of the labor force.[11] Thus, because trade liberalization can sometimes contribute to increases in GDP, it can help to bring the rate of unemployment down in a country. The U.S. experienced a 48% increase in real GDP from 1993-2005. The unemployment rate over this period was an average of only 5.1%, compared to 7.1% from 1982-1993, before NAFTA was implemented.

NAFTA has been an incredible success...for MEXICO.

When the North American Free Trade Agreement was first signed in 1994, proponents said it would eventually create jobs for the U.S. economy.

17 years later, a new report estimates, the American worker only has hundreds of thousands of job losses to show for it.

According to a report by Economic Policy Institute economist Robert Scott, entitled "Heading South: U.S.-Mexico trade and job displacement after NAFTA," an estimated 682,900 U.S. jobs have been "lost or displaced" because of the agreement and the resulting trade deficit.

The historic agreement, signed just three years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, tore down trade barriers between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, making trade and investment easier for businesses without allowing for the cross-border movement of labor. Despite the agreement being considered a boon for Mexico, the country's economy grew only 1.6 percent per capita on average between 1992 and 2007, The New York Times reported in 2009.

There can only be one possible outcome in a free trade deal with a country with lower labor costs...American's standard of living declines.

The ONLY entity enriched by free trade is corporations. And they were going to make damn sure they got it with their bought and paid for elected officials.

NAFTA Boom or Bust

Bill Clinton turned to 19 serious pre-NAFTA studies which projected no job loss of NAFTA were to pass. Clinton went so far as to estimate that more than 200,000 jobs would be created in the US within 24 months of NAFTA’s passage. He also claimed that 1 million new jobs within five years would result because of a hoped for export boom into Mexico. Now, twenty years later, the US trade deficit stands at 450 percent and one million jobs have been exported.

The average annual US agriculture trade deficit with Mexico grew to three times the pre-NAFTA level. US food processors relocated to Mexico, attracted by the low wages and US food imports went through the roof.

The export of US subsidized corn did increase during the first ten years of NAFTA’s existence. One million Mexican campesino farmers saw their livelihoods decimated and another 14 million ag workers out of jobs. The Mexican immigration to the US doubled and within Mexico mass re-location and dis-location have taken place.

Now, the US government is pimping the Trans-Pacific Partnership, kind of a NAFTA with Vietnam. Claiming that democracy and prosperity to together, the TPP has been used to challenge everything from Net Neutrality to state sovereignty. Leaked documents from TPP permits corporations to sue governments for lost profits in international tribunals that bypass the US court system and to throw out the history of regulatory laws which were meant to help people and the environment.

As America gets closer to TPP, the lessons from NAFTA should be remembered. NAFTA called for a “just, sustainable and prosperous future.” The reality is that economic inequality has exploded. Since NAFTA was signed into law, the piece of the national income pie collected by the wealthiest 10 percent ballooned by 24 percent. The Top 1 percent’s share? Risen by over 58 percent.

It's become obvious the plan is to get rid of the American middle class,or redefine it to a lower common denominator with workers who consider getting to eat meat once a week a luxury.
And retire? You can forget that to,you'll be working till you drop dead or become a useless eater to be denied medical care when you are no longer productive.
Anyone who cant see this is the direction we're being led isnt paying attention.

What a phony you are!
And a joke!

The NWO Globalist Elites run the show. They pass our Laws, they steal our money, they commit us to Permanent War, and they choose our Presidents. People need to forget about that ridiculous old 'Republican vs. Democrat' paradigm. That's just for show. Just a way to keep the Little People squabbling with each other. A dastardly misdirection magic trick.

Just shut the fuck up

and it was one of those fake "close" votes...where you know they were almost all sell-outs... but some were allowed to vote no because the opposition in their districts was higher ......tho this is unpopular across this nation.............

These votes demonstrate that our system is broken.............

They show that the irrational makeup of the Senate particularly needs to be changed.....

I don't see how a majority vote can remove the constitutional requirement for a 2/3s vote

So you didnt live in a border state. Which of course those are the first to be effected.
I dont know what kind of machine work you did but I did the high end stuff for NASA and medical companies.
Those jobs were very high paying right up until they started bringing in mexicans and training them.
I've said it here a half dozen times. I watched machine shops go from 3% hispanic to over 80% in twenty years...and the pay stagnated.
I was smart enough to start making other plans for income or I never would have been able to retire.

If retiring at 46 is a personal problem ...I guess I have a personal problem.

Once again I am going to confuse the situation with real numbers. edgetho get your head out of your ass and look. 1992, see all those positive trade numbers? That is good. See what in 3 years NAFTA did? Of course not you were still able to rent beach umbrellas so it had no real effect on you.

Of course all the numbers went up due mostly to inflation so it is the imbalance that tells the story.

Sure we can. The negotiations under the trade agreement are classified. Not the trade agreement itself.

Then what the FUCK are you crying about??

Jesus fucking christ on a fucking pogo stick but you like to whine like a little bitch.

You're not a dimocrap because your conscience won't allow it. But you're not a Republican either because, frankly, you're not intelligent or mature enough.

So all you got is to bitch.

Problem is -- You people aren't even aware of what it is you think you're against.

You have no clue. You don't even know 'TPA' is.

It's the same authority every President has had. Not just this one.

If this scumbag piece of shit lying motherfucker of a racist America-Hating pile of filth makes a bad deal (which he likely will, knowing what a piece of filth he is) the next president can simply ignore it, Congress can overturn or the Judicial Branch can strike it down.

Much too much hysteria surrounding this whole thing.

obama is a lying scumbag, I get that. I don't trust him either.

dimocrap filth are sucking up to their mafia criminal Union pals, I get that.

This is not really all that binding. I don't see how we can lose by passing it

What about all the shit added to it that has to do with immigration?
If this is such a good deal for America why all the secrecy and the need to support people because they've lost their job because of it?

yep, Sen. Manchin said that aides couldnt even take notes.......more secrecy than around Iranian nuclear negotiations.
