In America, conservatives tend to support our established institutions (the nuclear family, the church, law and order, a strong and independent press) and a strong republic with democratic principles. They mostly value individual self-determination and self-preservation, hard work, obeying the law, and preserving the environment and a free market. Traditionally, they have also believed that everyone deserves an equal chance to succeed regardless of background or demographics, but society should not be responsible for aiding those who cheat or are lazy.

They tend toward the Reagan way of thinking, that the federal government should be as small and laissez-faire as possible, and that the government's promise of liberty means to impose as few regulations and restrictions on any American person or entity as possible.

Conservatives are also one of several ideologies on the right wing, meaning that they believe in an organized society, in which some members deserve to be in a superior position than others. In conservatives' case, that mostly means people who work hard and follow the law deserve more benefits of society because they deserve to keep what they're rightfully earned. Conservatives view many tax-funded social assistance programs as income redistribution, which they strongly oppose.

In America, the GOP has outlawed actual conservatism. They kept the name and changed the definition, without sending out the memo.
Note, Republicans, news organizations and even the RNC itself will claim that Trump is a conservative. Which he's not. Not a fiscal or constitutional conservative, that is. He's more of a new republican. (neocon).
