The Pope calls for end of death penalty

when he tears down that wall he has protecting him. then he can get involved in our countries business. until them he should be preaching to Obama, Hillary, Bernie for being such awful human beings and they should repent.

No more death penalty? So crucifixions are out? :dunno:

There are some instances when the death penalty makes sense

That said I think the burden of proof for capital punishment has to change from reasonable doubt to no shadow of a doubt

good point-----it does seem that they REALLY BIG conviction fiascos have
been on capital crimes----(just an impression)

The National Council of Catholic Bishops has been advocating the elimination of the death penalty for decades.

Deterrent? Hmm. Well, the dead Fukker won't be committing any more crimes, will he? That is, by definition, "deterrence."

In order for a given punishment to act as a GENERAL deterrent (that is, it will deter OTHERS from committing crimes), a couple things have to be present: There has to be a clear perception in the target audience that they will be APPREHENDED if they commit the crime, and that if apprehended, tried, and convicted, they will actually be EXECUTED.

In this country, the ACLU and its fellow travelers in the Bar and in our Court System have made the death penalty a sort of negative state lottery. You have about a one in a thousand chance of actually being executed, regardless of how horrific the crime was, or how convincing the evidence. There is more "deterrence" in knowing that a motorcycle is a dangerous mode of transportation.

And we have the MSM, which is uniformly against the DP, and they constantly dredge up stories of people who are "innocent" and on death row, as though that is a common phenomenon.

I oppose the Death Penalty because it is so impotent and useless, and so expensive to actually get it done. Having the death penalty is simply not worth the effort.

Pope calls for worldwide abolition of death penalty

There is no evidence that it acts as a deterrent, so its application is purely revenge/punishment.

Is he right or misguided ?

The New Testament says that the law ("a life for a life") can be practiced...wonder why he would talk against the New Testament.
He is saying this.

"The commandment "You shall not kill," has absolute value and applies to both the innocent and the guilty,"

Johny has cancer and his Dr at St. Mary's Hospital is about to kill the cancer when suddenly the Pope steps in to declare we shall not kill cancer (instead of addressing the cancer to not kill).
Johny's wife throws up her arms and blasts;
the Pope should mind his own business and worry about his own priorities with his appeasement and meetings with evil mass murdering dictators.
Quickly Johny and his wife sneek out to
The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes- Jewish Hospital where killing that which kills is ok, because they know the difference between though shalt not kill and thou shalt not murder.

Catholics are not required to be either pro or con the death penalty. Pope Francis is giving his own opinion--with which many Catholics agree, and some do not. The reason to eliminate the death penalty in the United States is because it actually costs more to use the death penalty than it does to imprison someone for life. Theologically, when a Church sees life as a great gift from God, then one supports life over death. Here's the problem. If a country cannot incarcerate for life, and a murderer goes free to commit more murders, the theological position must weigh the life of the guilty versus the lives of innocents.

... Catholics are not required to be either pro or con the death penalty. ....

What's wrong. Death penalty is not compatible with the catholic faith. The only reason for death penalty in former times was it to eliminate extremly dangerous human beings - so everyone was able to live in peace. But today prisons are save, so there's no need any longer for death penalty.

Such a sentence like "life for a life" could mean only to give the own life instead of a killed life. A man who for example accidentally killed someone was for example responsible for the life of the old mother of the killed person. Do you have a concrete context in the NT?

You misquoted that...Meriweather said that.

It's in one of Paul's epistles.

Another thread near the top of the forum says Mohammed Cala for killing but Jesus does not.

And yet it's the "christians" here you want bloodshed.

They're the same "christians" who want children, elderly and disabled to starve on the street.
