The National Council of Catholic Bishops has been advocating the elimination of the death penalty for decades.
Deterrent? Hmm. Well, the dead Fukker won't be committing any more crimes, will he? That is, by definition, "deterrence."
In order for a given punishment to act as a GENERAL deterrent (that is, it will deter OTHERS from committing crimes), a couple things have to be present: There has to be a clear perception in the target audience that they will be APPREHENDED if they commit the crime, and that if apprehended, tried, and convicted, they will actually be EXECUTED.
In this country, the ACLU and its fellow travelers in the Bar and in our Court System have made the death penalty a sort of negative state lottery. You have about a one in a thousand chance of actually being executed, regardless of how horrific the crime was, or how convincing the evidence. There is more "deterrence" in knowing that a motorcycle is a dangerous mode of transportation.
And we have the MSM, which is uniformly against the DP, and they constantly dredge up stories of people who are "innocent" and on death row, as though that is a common phenomenon.
I oppose the Death Penalty because it is so impotent and useless, and so expensive to actually get it done. Having the death penalty is simply not worth the effort.
