Regardless of the criminality of Trump's activities in this regard - about which reasonable people disagree and Leftists as usual are out to lunch - Trump owes his supporters a candid explanation of WTF he was doing with these materials, and why he insisted on retaining them. Saying he was willing to turn them back will not do. Why did he have them???

He owes no one anything. I assume that ALL presidents in history have have kept documents.
