In some instances the Death Penalty is, indeed, somewhat of a deterrent.
In many instances, however, it is merely Old Testament -style Eye-for-an-Eye thinking.
I, for one, am fine with that
You murder someone (unjustified homicide) and you SHOULD die for it.
Within a matter of a year-or-two... after exhausting a far-more-limited round of appeals... not twenty or thirty years later.
Avenges the victim... gives closure to the victim's family... gets it over-with for the Perp, and is much easier on taxpayer wallets.
Will a terrible "mistake" be made every once-in-a-blue-moon?

Well it deters the murder of more victims by the criminal. At one time, America held the trial in days after the murder and not years later. And Sentences were carried out in days in some cases and in months in most of the rest. Democrats worked to drag this out. The first two years of Joe we saw trillions and trillions of dollars printed with no apparent results. This was the catalyst. You guys said you knew better.
