Just to remind everyone ... in political science, there is no such thing as "left-wing fascism."

There is brutal left-wing authoritarianism, to be sure (hello, Stalin). There is left-wing totalitarianism, autocracy, demagoguery, dictatorship, all that, but not fascism.

The left wing believes that the benefits of society should be applied equally to all, without questioning whether so-and-so deserves it. Socialism is about industry being owned and distributed equally; left-wing protests are always going on about equal treatment under the law; even extremes such as Communism are sold on the idea that the workers will be equal with the fat cats. It's all about equality.

Fascism is extreme nationalism, or the belief that people of one nation deserve more than the others. In Mussolini's Italian capital-F Fascists, it was the inheritors of Rome; in Nazi Germany, it was the Aryans. That is the exact opposite of equality.

It's become a popular insult to throw at people you don't like, because it's shorter and punchier than 'brutal authoritarian.' So sure, it's fun to call the cops 'fascists' as they're breaking up your party, but don't lose sight of *actual* fascism, because it's a serious threat to democracy.

Okay, got that off my chest. You can go back to bashing Democrats now.

Just as a reminder, fascism is exclusively left-wing. Nobody disputes that the Nazis were fascists. Nobody. And Nazi stood for National Socialists. And no, Hitler didn't believe in free markets or small government.
