It would be both a strategic and tactical mistake for the Iranian Theocracy to attempt that.

It would provide the U.S. and the rest of The West (and some of The East) the perfect excuse to destroy the Theocracy.

The absolute destruction of Iranian naval assets (what few there are), air assets (ditto) and missile launchers would be swift.

If I'm not mistaken the Iranians have a few submarines.

Our Navy could use some target practice in the ASW sphere.

Add to that, that China has already invested a trillion dollars in Iranian infrastructure with the agreement that they get a super sweetheart deal on oil in exchange So if they were to buy oil from Russia now, they would be out all that money and right back to paying full market price again.

Its a bluff now, as they have no air force. If they interfere with International shipping we can easily take them out. Most likely though as they realize that the US government is not bluffing when they say there is a red line..... they will stand down.

Oh, they can wreak havoc for a few days or a week or more with missile fire but they will exhaust their supply quickly, will not be able to replenish as supply lines and manufacturing plant are obliterated, and as area bombardment flattens entire areas nearby where launches are detected, under circumstances where precision munitions won't do the job.
